About Salix Grants

Therapeutic Focus

The primary focus of requests for grant funding from Salix should be on Continuing Medical Education and Continuing Education (CME/CE) activities and educational initiatives that advance the quality of patient care and align with Salix's major therapeutic or clinical interests. These include the following areas:

Gastroenterology

• Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)
  • Ulcerative Colitis (UC)
  • Crohn's Disease
• Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
• Colon Cancer Screening and Prevention

Hepatic Diseases

• Hepatic Encephalopathy

Infectious Diseases

• Travelers' Diarrhea
• Clostridium difficile-Associated Diarrhea (CDAD)

Programs in therapeutic areas outside of those listed above generally will not be considered. Please note that, while grant applications for educational programs in the above-mentioned therapeutic areas will receive higher priority, not all requests in these therapeutic areas can be approved. All grants are awarded at Salix's sole discretion.

Criteria

Salix awards educational grants to support CME/CE activities, development of healthcare publications, and other legitimate educational and scientific programs based on a number of criteria, including the following:

• Demonstrated unmet educational needs of healthcare providers
• Educational method
• Efficient use of funds
• Availability of funds
• Alignment with Salix's areas of therapeutic focus or clinical interests
• Timely completion of grant application materials

Priority is given to:

• Live educational programs that are advertised and open to a broad audience
• Educational publications or other types of enduring materials (CD ROM, DVD, Web site) that are advertised and available to a broad audience
• Educational programs that offer Continuing Medical Education (CME) or Continuing Education (CE) credit

Grant request approval is never based on or linked to past, present, or future prescribing, formulary, purchasing, recommending, or reimbursement of Salix products.

Compliance

Grants must be compliant with the following guidelines and guidance:

• Salix's internal company policies and guidelines
• Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) guidelines
• American Medical Association (AMA) Guidelines on Continuing Medical Education
• Office of the Inspector General (OIG) Compliance Program Guidance for Pharmaceutical Manufacturers
• FDA Guidance to Industry: Industry-Supported Scientific and Educational Activities
• PhRMA Code on Interactions with Healthcare Professionals

Salix personnel involved in CME or non-CME Educational Programs must be compliant with the following guidelines:

• Salix employees or representatives may not comment on, review, or otherwise influence a speaker's presentation, except for comments regarding medical accuracy; and
• No Salix employee may engage in product promotion or marketing activities or distribute promotional materials at independent educational activities supported by Salix.

Eligible Organizations

Salix provides grants to:

• Associations, foundations, and professional societies (priority placed on those that are not-for-profit)
• Hospitals, universities and colleges
• Patient associations and advocacy groups
• Other qualified groups that have the potential to provide independent, high-quality education to advance healthcare may be approved on a case-by-case basis

Prohibited Organizations

Grants will not be provided to:

• Any individual, including doctor or groups of doctors in a private practice
• Debarred institutions, groups or faculty, including organizations or their employees on probation with the ACCME, on the OIG exclusion list or debarred from a federal healthcare program

Prohibited Grants

• Under no circumstances may a grant be tied to past, present, or future prescribing, purchasing, or recommendation of any drug. Any documentation which suggests that the grant is tied, in any way, to past, present, or future prescribing, purchasing, or recommending of any Salix product will cause the grant request to be denied
• Grants must be used exclusively to fund specific educational programs
• Grants cannot be used for the purchase of journal subscriptions or similar items, as these items may be considered practice-related items or as part of operating expenses

What is an educational grant?

Grants awarded to support specific educational activities. Examples include:

• Grants to independent continuing medical education ("CME") or continuing education ("CE") providers to support educational activities for healthcare professionals, including medical students, residents, fellows, and others in training;
• Non-CME grants to support educational activities
• Grants to support the dissemination of educational materials to practitioners or patients (e.g., as part of disease management programs)

What is a charitable grant?

Contributions made to not-for-profit organizations. Examples include:

• Donation to support an event raising awareness about a cause
• Donation to support the mission of a charitable organization
